Fig Roll OR Anjeer-Mawa Roll

‘Anjeer-Mawa Roll’ is an exotic Indian Sweet. It is uniquely delicious and very easy-peasy to make. The dried figs, mixed nuts and crumbled mawa are cooked together, and then shaped into cylindrical rolls and coated with crushed pistachios.

  • 200 gms Dried Fig / Anjeer
  • 1 cup Mawa, crumbled
  • 4 tbsp Sugar
  • 2-3 tbsp Ghee
  • 1 tbsp Almonds, chopped
  • 1 tbsp Cashew, chopped
  • 1 tbsp Pistachio, chopped
  • 1 tbsp Walnuts, chopped
  • 1/4 cup Pistachios, finely crushed (for coating)
  • 1/2 tsp Cardamom Powder

  1. Soak dried fig in little boiling water for 20 to 30 minute.
  2. Drain water from the figs and puree them into a coarse paste. You should get around 1 cup thick paste. Do not throw away the water in which figs were soaked we need them while cooking.
  3. Take 2 tbsp of ghee in a deep non stick pan. Add the fig paste and saute on low-medium flame for 3-4 mins.
  4. Add Mawa and cook for 2 more minutes. Add little water as required and stir continuously.
  5. Add sugar, ghee and cardamom, mix well and cook for 2 mins or until the mixture turns light brown in colour.
  6. Now add in the chopped mixed nuts. Stir and cook for a minute and its ready. Let it stand for 10 mins.
  7. Cut few parchment or grease paper or thin plastic sheets into rectangular sheets.
  8. Now line few spoons of this mixture on the middle of the sheet in a horizontal way. Fold the sheet half way down and try to roll the mixture tightly into a cylindrical roll.   [Sorry for the bad picture guy, as i had clicked these at night.   9. You might have to grease your hands with ghee, if you have to roll these with hands.
  10. Sprinkle some finely crushed pistachios on these rolled figs and try to coat them evenly on all sides.
  11. Place them in the refrigerator for an hour to set. Now cut them into 1.5 inch rolls and store in an air tight container.
  12. This recipe yielded around 20 rolls. They stay fresh for 3 days at room temperature and a week when stored in a refrigerator or a month or two when stored in a freezer.
  • You can skip the sugar if you wish to. We like it mildly sweet so added only 4 tbsp sugar, but you can add more sugar if desired.
  • If you find it difficult to roll the anjeer mixture, then you can just spread the mixture in a greased flat plate/pan and sprinkle the pistachios on top. Cut into sqaures when completely set. Anjeer/Fig Barfi is ready.

    1. Thank you so much dear 🙂 Yeah some Indian sweets are real complicated, but this one is very easy. As I have used mawa instead of cashew here for this roll, handling cashew is lil tricky. I would call it a bachelor’s sweet recipe. 😉
